The Battery Monitor, an advanced device designed for marine applications, seamlessly reports critical information such as measured voltage and current, calculated health and charge state, and user-programmed static data to the NMEA 2000 network. Additionally, it boasts the capability to initiate actions like starting the genset or providing warnings when the battery state reaches a critical level.

Designed to work with any single DC source or load, the Battery Monitor is especially tailored for monitoring marine batteries. To function optimally, it requires an external shunt (not included) within the range of 5A to 1200A, widely available from various sources (refer to Section V "Choosing a Shunt" in the User Manual). For enhanced accuracy in charge state and health detection, the device can be configured to utilize data from a connected NMEA 2000 thermometer, providing comprehensive information including temperature, voltage, and current data.

Key features and capabilities of the Battery Monitor include:

Configuration Flexibility: The device incorporates a MicroSD card slot for configuration and firmware updates using a standard FAT-formatted card. Configuration options include drop voltage, maximum current for the connected shunt, and battery parameters such as nominal capacity, voltage, and chemistry.

Integration with NMEA 2000 Digital Switching: The Battery Monitor can be configured to manage channels of an NMEA 2000 digital switching system. It can trigger a digital alarm unit compatible with standard NMEA 2000 PGNs 127501/127502. For instance, it can raise alerts about low battery charge or control equipment, start a genset, or perform other actions with the Circuit Control.

Electrical Characteristics:

  • External shunt rated current: 5..2500 A
  • External shunt's nominal voltage drop (recommended): 75 mV
  • Current measurement accuracy: ±0.5%
  • Maximum allowed DC voltage on inputs: 40 V
  • Voltage measurement accuracy: 0.1 V
  • Breakdown voltage between NMEA 2000 network interface and inputs: 2500 VRMS

The versatile nature of the Battery Monitor allows it to adapt to diverse marine environments, providing comprehensive insights into battery health and facilitating proactive actions to ensure uninterrupted vessel operations.
