A device of a cylindrical, elongated shape, side-mounted type - it is hung from the board on a rope so that it serves as a protective bumper between the ship's hull and other surfaces. Used by shipowners around the world in a wide variety of situations:

• mooring to the piers;
• passing through narrow channels;
• joint mooring;
• maneuvering among other ships;
• when docking with other boats and yachts.

Fenders are placed on one side before docking or on both sides at once in case of tacking or mooring in crowded marinas. Most prefer to buy enough shock absorbers to secure the entire perimeter of their yacht's hull so as not to end up spending money on costly damage repairs.

Fenders are selected individually, usually based on the recommendations of sellers or manufacturers, but the standard practice for a medium-sized boat is one protective fender for every two to three meters of hull length, and the diameter is calculated on the basis of 2.5 cm of diameter for every 120-130 cm of length. There are separate types of fenders for the stern or bow of the boat.
