Types of Fenders for Dock and Berth Protection
Not only boats need protection from damage during mooring, but also berthing structures. Especially if we are not talking about fully equipped port facilities that deal with huge cargo ships or oil tankers, but about small docks and piers, as well as floating pontoons.
Regardless of the throughput of the dock or the size and materials of protective devices, the principle of their operation is the same. They take on all the force of the impact when the boat hits the mooring wall or the edge of the pontoon.
In this case, the impact force is distributed over the entire area of the fender and weakens at each of its points. Having a shock-absorbing effect, the buffer pushes the boat away from the dock after impact. At the same time, the kinetic energy of the waves is absorbed thanks to the damping effect of the protective device. As a result, the amplitude of the ship's rocking decreases, which means that with each new contact, the impact force is significantly reduced.
But the rocking of the vessel cannot completely disappear; there is a danger of damage to the sides, stern or bow of the boat from friction against the quay wall during parking. That's why dock fenders are essential permanent attributes of any quay, pier or berth.
Many owners of yachts, catamarans, small fishing boats and other small watercraft have their own berth that needs safety fenders and accessories. Not only protective devices perform their direct functions –exclude damage to the boat and the pier itself, but using them at the docks also frees up valuable space on the boat, as you don't have to store as much of the boat fenders there. Unless, of course, during the voyage you’ll have to moor to other berths.
Owner and tenants of berths or boat anchorage spots should also take care to equip docks with protective devices in order to:
- protect the quay wall or the edge of the berth from damage during the mooring process;
- ensure safe maneuvers during mooring for all the boats;
- to avoid claims from the owners of the vessels due to damage to the boat during mooring.
The range of fenders for the protection of docks and berths is huge. Such protective devices are divided into various categories according to location, design, material used, etc.
By type of location, quay fenders are divided into floating and fixed. Both of them are located between the mooring wall and the mooring vessel.
Floating models are made of polymer alloys or polyurethane foam. These can be inflatable floating fenders made of soft PVC with a cylindrical shape or models of various shapes filled with foam.
Such devices do an excellent job of protecting berthing structures in regions where there are no strong currents, tides, storms - they are good for securing moorings in inland waters. But for berths located on the sea coast, such protection is not enough. To enhance the reliability of the protective effect, fixed fenders are used. You can get some idea of the diversity of this category of dock fenders & accessories just by looking at what our marketplace has to offer.
The category of fixed fenders for berths includes the following types of bumpers:
- linear and angular protection of the edge of the berth or pontoon - made of soft PVC, acts as a bumper, can be mounted in any direction (horizontal or vertical), as well as at corners;
- inflatable protection of the berths – made of soft PVC, consisting of several fragments (blocks) that can be bent at different angles, which facilitates the protection of the mooring edge of a complex configuration;
- bendy inflatable block fenders, consisting of segments, to protect mooring piles and edges of the quay of complex configuration;
- flat inflatable block fenders made of divided fragments, bending in any direction - used to protect the surface of the quay wall of any configuration, as well as the tubular elements of the quay (berthing piles, racks, etc.);
- rigid one-piece molded plastic fenders - used in regions with strong currents and tides;
- rubber protection with built-in airless anti-friction chambers to protect the edges of the pontoons;
- protection of the berth and vessel when mooring astern (important for marinas of the Mediterranean basin) with built-in airless anti-friction chambers;
- protection of the berth and vessel during mooring by the bow with built-in airless anti-friction chambers;
- rotary cylindrical fenders based on airless anti-friction chambers;
- swivel spherical dock wheel fenders - scrolling with each contact with the side of the vessel.
The protective equipment of the berth is selected depending on the size of the vessel being moored to it and on the situation in the water area where the dock is located. If this is your personal yacht, and the berth is located in a region where there are no or minimal ebb and flow waves, a floating berthing fender of the appropriate diameter will suffice.
If the situation in the water area requires more serious protection, several types of dock fenders & accessories can be combined. For example, if stern mooring is intended, install swivel cylindrical or spherical fenders, and protect piles and posts with inflatable block fenders.

What Other Accessories Are Used to Protect the Dock
Manufacturers have provided equipment to protect the berths, where medium-sized ships moor. Heavy-duty fenders are made from high-quality polymer and provide a greater distance between the berth and the mooring vessel. Such equipment includes the following types of bumpers for extreme loads:
- pontoon long fenders with increased depth;
- pontoon rectangular fenders with improved internal structure that enhances the shock-absorbing and damping effect;
- rubber profiles specially designed for the boating sector, with a retractable segment;
- radial long dock PVC fenders with a retractable segment.
More powerful fenders are used to protect the docks for large-tonnage vessels. They are made of molded rubber, metal and are of considerable size. Manufacturers also offer options for inflatable fenders the size of a motorboat.
One-piece port fenders can be conical, cylindrical, arcuate, rectangular, as well as having a complex composite configuration.
