When mooring, due to strong waves or the inertia of the course, there are high risks of colliding with a berth or another yacht, so shipowners purchase such devices to protect their own and others' vessels from damage. After being inflated, they are hung from one side or around the entire perimeter, and in this way the fenders serve as an airbag - they isolate the side from contact with other surfaces.

Devices are inflated using conventional automotive, electric, boat pumps or a compressor. Inflatable fenders are convenient because they are:

• lightweight and easy to transport;
• do not require permanent fixation;
• compact when folded.

It is also convenient to switch them from side to side and lift them before setting off. They are hung along the side in a vertical or horizontal position, tied with ropes by the eyes. On the ship itself, the end is attached to something sturdy like the railing, many have special brackets for fenders. The placement height is regulated depending on the mooring conditions, amount of other vessels in the harbor and weather conditions.
