The vast majority of both private shipowners and professionals, buy a set of onboard and stern type dampers in advance.

The inflatable fender for side protection is used as follows:

  1. Filled with air to create the desired pressure.
  2. Fastened with a cable or rope for the eye.
  3. Placed at points of potential contact along the length of the ship.
  4. Adjust the desired height depending on the conditions.

The standard recommendation for usage is to have a minimum of 3 units on each side, but at least one protective buffer per 3 m of side length. The required length largely depends on the pier where you have to moor, because it can be stationary and then it is better to take longer and elongated fenders so that they cover 2/3 of the side.

When mooring to floating docks, smaller fenders can be used, because the pier there is raised and lowered together with boats and yachts during high and low tide or strong waves. Boats that are tied to floating pontoons usually have fenders right above the waterline.
