Furious winds and chaotic seas are on the menu at the moment for Jérémie Beyou (Charal), Sam Goodchild (Vulnerable) dealing with a mainsail breakdown, Paul Meilhat (Biotherm), Nicolas Lunven (Holcim PRB), Justine Mettraux (TeamWork), and to a lesser extent Thomas Ruyant (Vulnerable). Entangled in the grip of a violent winter depression, the skippers are hunkering down hoping to minimize the damage before the arrival of an even more vicious second blow expected near the Bay of Biscay by the end of the week...

Main sail breakdown aboard Sam Goodchild's Vulnerable
The ocean race is unforgiving, and British skipper Sam Goodchild, aboard the sailboat VULNERABLE, learned this the hard way on Monday. Shortly before 1 pm, he informed the Vendée Globe race management and his technical team TR Racing of a major tear in his mainsail. This incident occurred during an untimely gybe under autopilot, while the sailboat was facing 30-knot winds off the Azores. The sail literally split across its entire width, from head to tack, at the level of the third batten, leaving the skipper helpless less than 1,200 miles from the finish line.
