Expansion of Gibraltar's luxury yacht harbor finished

Marina Projects has recently finished designing new superyacht berths at Ocean Village and Marina Bay in Gibraltar. The marina redevelopment includes 144 waterfront rental apartments constructed over the water on mini piles, with access provided through a landscaped pier.

This development boasts a Marina Club, over 10,000sqm of residential space, and is specifically designed to accommodate superyachts up to 80m (262ft) in length. Marina Projects strategically arranged the berths around the perimeter of the development, incorporating a modern design and high-quality berthing systems aimed at attracting some of the world’s most prestigious vessels.

Marina Projects’ scope of services encompassed a design study that pinpointed the preferred berthing arrangements for implementation during construction. The study process involved resolving various critical design interfaces, including detailed mooring analysis and interactions with quayside infrastructure.

The project presented a set of unique challenges.

Marina Projects devised a combination of stern-to berths on piled anchorages surrounding the Marina Club, as well as stern-to berths on floating pontoons for smaller superyachts. All berths are equipped with head-mooring buoys to enhance the convenience and stability of yacht mooring.

The upcoming phase of the project will concentrate on linking the superyacht berths to the club’s spa decks and other amenities. Throughout the construction, the marina remained fully operational, with a mini piling system employed to minimize noise and disruption.

The complete 270-berth marina underwent a redesign, incorporating both fixed and floating pontoons to optimize water space and allow for longer and wider berths. Traditional Mediterranean-style moorings were replaced with modern finger pontoon berths to enhance the accessibility and usability of the marina.

Simon Goodhead, commercial director at Marina Projects, emphasized, “The project posed a series of unique challenges that necessitated thorough consideration of the vessel types and their operational requirements. This new high-quality, leading development will ensure Ocean Village Marina can accommodate superyachts within Gibraltar’s iconic location.”
