The Storm Marine Group has unveiled its inaugural project, the Storm 18 18ft keelboat, marking a new era for club sailing vessels. Co-founders Bill Crane and Karl Ziegle introduced this modern, ergonomic, and durable keelboat, designed to be easy to maintain, as the next step in the evolution from the Ideal 18.
The primary goal for the company is to create a versatile boat that can be utilized by yacht clubs, sailing schools, and public sailing centers. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and usability for members, students, and the general public.
The prototype of the Storm 18 was first showcased at the Newport Boat Show in the late summer, with plans for the official launch set for Spring 2025. Bill Crane, co-founder of Storm Marine and former chairman of LaserPerformance Group, shared insights on the extensive field testing conducted over the past six months across various locations in the country.
The development and design team at Storm Marine is dedicated to a thorough and extended process to deliver what they believe will be the most adaptable and superior club boat on the market. Karl Ziegle emphasizes the design's inclusivity, aiming to accommodate individuals with disabilities and women, ensuring ease of movement on board.
Feedback from the prototype’s tour has led to several significant modifications. Adjustments include raising the boom by six inches, resizing the mainsheet sail, redesigning the spinnaker bags and sail covers, and relocating essential controls to enhance the usability and avoid clutter.
The team behind the Storm 18 includes notable figures like builder David Clark of Fulcrum Speedworks, sailmaker Robbie Doyle, and naval architects Bob Ames and Casey Brown. Together, they strive to create a boat that stands out in its category for its versatility, affordability, and adaptability.
Karl Ziegle, reflecting on the vision behind the Storm 18, mentioned, "We have all benefited from institutional sailing and see this project as a way to give back to the sport that has given us so much. It’s about fueling our passion and helping to build the future of sailing."
