VIKAND, a provider of medical services at sea for passengers, crew members, and personnel aboard cruise ships, yachts, and commercial vessels, has introduced an innovative air purification system designed to combat black mold on marine vessels. The newly developed Pyure Dynamic Protection system utilizes FDA-approved air purification technology that imitates the natural process of air and surface purification.
According to VIKAND, the system produces hydroxyls, highly reactive molecules found in Earth's atmosphere, to actively neutralize mold spores, bacteria, viruses, and other harmful airborne particles. The company claims that their technology can eliminate up to 99.9999% of viruses, bacteria, and mold within seconds to hours. Currently, the system has been installed on 50 superyachts, with reported reductions of black mold organisms in the air by 99.9% within 30 minutes and complete elimination within 90 minutes. On surfaces, the reduction reaches 99.9% within 48 hours.
Director of Technical Solutions at VIKAND, Mattias Hallberg, highlighted that "This technology not only eliminates existing mold but also prevents future growth, providing peace of mind to vessel operators and creating healthier environments for individuals on board."
VIKAND shared a success story where a yacht over 140 meters in length, facing severe mold infestations, witnessed the eradication of airborne mold spores within weeks of installing Pyure devices. Black mold, a toxic fungus, can result in respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and long-term health issues if left unaddressed. The new air purification technology not only improves air quality but also reduces carbon emissions and operational expenses by optimizing air recirculation and reducing resistance, according to VIKAND.
