Nautilus International Successfully Recovers Outstanding Salaries for Yacht Crew Members

Nautilus International has released their statistics for the year 2024, announcing the successful recovery of over £2.17 million in overdue wages and benefits for yacht crew members. This trade union and professional organization caters to the needs of more than 20,000 maritime professionals in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Derek Byrne, the head of Nautilus's yacht sector, expressed his pride in the accomplishments of the union's yacht and legal teams in 2024. He emphasized the persistent issue of wage non-payment in the sector and stressed the importance of having a trade union like Nautilus to support individuals in such situations, ensuring they receive the compensation they rightfully deserve.

The 2024 recovery figure includes compensations for crew members of the M/Y Alfa Nero, a vessel that was confiscated by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda following over a year of docking at the Antigua Yacht Club Marina. The yacht's owner, Russian billionaire Andrey Guryev, faced sanctions by the United States Department of the Treasury due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Legal actions culminated in Nautilus seizing the yacht on behalf of the crew in March 2023. The union pursued the sale of the vessel to settle outstanding wages totaling €2,242,991.62, with an additional claim from non-union crew members filed in October 2023 for €439,494.40. These claims were eventually merged for resolution.

The amount recovered in 2024 surpasses the £1.3 million retrieved in the previous year and approaches Nautilus's peak of over £2.75 million in 2022. The increase is attributed to a continuous rise in crew members joining the union to benefit from its services.

Besides its legal aid, Nautilus aids crew members in negotiating improved wages and working conditions, offers guidance in maritime incidents, and provides access to tools like their digital sea time logging service. The International Labour Organization recognizes Nautilus as the leading global trade union for yacht sector workers.
