British Sailing Equipment Retailer and Sailmaker Purchased

UK-based sailmaker and chandlery company P&B, originally founded by renowned sailor and author Ian Pinnell, has been acquired by new owners. Pinnell established the company, contributing significantly to the marine industry with his expertise and innovative approaches.

The origins of P&B trace back to 1974, initially known as Storrar & Bax. The company started by manufacturing sails and repairing boats and spars, while also supplying a range of chandlery items. Over the years, the company built a solid reputation for quality and reliability in the sailing community.

In 1991, the company underwent a rebranding to become Pinnell & Bax (P&B), marking a new chapter in its history. This change coincided with significant expansion and relocation to larger premises to accommodate its growing operations.

The company continued to evolve under the leadership of Dave Wade, who joined P&B in 1997 and climbed the ranks to become the commercial director. His leadership facilitated further innovations and successes for the company.

By 2014, P&B had ventured into designing and building its own dinghies, notably introducing the P&B/JP Solo, which marked the company's move to bring boat-building in-house following a successful launch.

The recent acquisition by GOAT Marine's Rhys Rollitt and Steve Badham is set to usher in a new era for P&B. The new owners plan to open a new shop in the Southwest as part of their strategy to expand and enhance the business further.

Rhys Rollitt expressed enthusiasm about leading the company into a new phase of growth, emphasizing that while the core aspects of P&B such as expert staff, prompt service, and high-quality sails will remain, the new leadership will also focus on increasing investment in stock, enhancing the website, and opening new outlets.

Steve Badham, sharing his excitement, highlighted the team's commitment to supporting Dave Wade and the entire staff in taking P&B to greater heights in this new phase of the company's journey.

Ian Pinnell, the founder, will continue to impart his valuable knowledge and experience as a consultant for the next two years, ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining continuity in the company’s operations.

Headquartered in Northampton, UK, P&B now serves over 30 classes of dinghies, wingfoils, and SUPs, and specializes in GRP, wood, and carbon dinghy and mast repairs, continuing to be a pivotal player in the marine industry.
