The NZ Millennium Cup is set to commence next week, marking the highly awaited debut of the 81-meter sailing yacht SEA EAGLE in regatta competitions. Constructed by Royal Huisman and unveiled in 2020, this modern schooner stands as one of the largest sailing yachts globally, and its first appearance in a race guarantees to be a remarkable sight.
Having successfully completed an impressive 45,000-nautical-mile global voyage, SEA EAGLE has demonstrated its capabilities as an explorer. However, maneuvering through the high-stakes racecourse of the NZ Millennium Cup will present a new challenge. "This is a very large yacht to be maneuvering on a racecourse alongside several other superyachts," mentioned Captain Henry Say. "We are all thrilled to embark on this new experience and witness the boat's potential; although, it's fair to say we are a bit nervous."
Designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, SEA EAGLE features a remarkable sail area—2,580sqm when sailing upwind and 3,552sqm downwind—and an innovative sail management system that can raise all three mainsails simultaneously. These elements were crafted with comfort, dependability, and performance at the forefront, as stated by Bas Isselmann from Royal Huisman.
"The goal for Sea Eagle was to design an incredibly comfortable and spacious superyacht with excellent seafaring abilities and exceptional amenities for everyone on board," explained Isselmann. "We aimed to create a genuine sailor's yacht... and that's precisely what we delivered - with a great sense of team pride."
Captain Say expresses optimism about the upcoming regatta. "We are eager to assemble a strong team and participate in a well-coordinated, social event. This is a new experience for the yacht owners, showcasing them the competitive side of the sport will be thrilling. Naturally, we have a deep affection for sailing SEA EAGLE and are excited to exhibit her performance."
The regatta, scheduled in Auckland from February 1–4, guarantees breathtaking harbor views and demanding conditions. "These waters have shaped numerous generations of New Zealand sailors, proving to be a challenging and stunning location for racing," commented event organizer Stacey Cook.
