New program for the D1 boating license: everything you need to know

Confindustria Nautica announces the publication in the Official Gazette of the decree that defines the examination program for the D1 nautical license. Commonly known as the "daytime license", this title allows navigation within 6 miles from the coast with engine powers up to 115 horsepower and can be obtained from the age of 16.

Main features of the course

The training course, organized by nautical schools, includes:

  • Minimum duration of 5 theoretical hours, divided into mandatory frontal lessons of maximum two hours per day.
  • Individual practical exercises of at least 5 hours, carried out on pleasure craft with a minimum length of 5.90 meters and power exceeding 40 horsepower.
  • Absence recovery, following the planned teaching methods.

Final exam: structure and procedure

At the end of the course, the candidate takes an aptitude exam consisting of:

  • 15 theoretical quizzes, with a maximum time of 30 minutes to complete the test.
  • Minimum required score: at least 12 correct answers.

Nautical schools communicate to the competent authorities the details of the course and the exam, including information for remote invigilation.

Examination program for the D1 license

The program is divided into eight fundamental thematic areas:

  1. Hull theory
    • Nomenclature, evolutionary effects of propeller and rudder, unit stability.
  2. Engines
    • Operation, common failures, and calculation of autonomy.
  3. Navigation safety
    • Use of fire extinguishers, safety regulations, fire prevention, emergency procedures.
  4. Maneuvers and handling
    • Berthing, unberthing, coastal navigation, and allowed speeds.
  5. COLREG
    • Rules to avoid collisions, light and day signals, maritime signaling.
  6. Meteorology
    • Basic concepts for daytime navigation.
  7. Navigation
    • Estimated navigation, bow, route, drift, leeway, and use of nautical publications.
  8. Boating and environmental regulations
    • Responsibilities of the captain, onboard documents, environmental regulations, and local rules.

Confindustria Nautica, in coordination with Unasca, Confarca, and the MIT, has contributed to the development of the examination program, also overseeing the quiz content.
