The Neoliner Origin Sets Sail: The World's Largest Sailing Cargo Ship Embarks on Its Maiden Voyage

The Neoliner Origin, the world's longest sailing cargo ship at 136 meters, is set to depart from Turkey fully laden in the summer of 2025, heading for the French port of Saint-Nazaire. Developed by Neoline, this groundbreaking vessel aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% after fourteen years of meticulous development.

On January 31, 2025, the Neoliner Origin was launched in the Turkish port of Tuzla. Following a traditional champagne christening, the cargo ship began a six-month phase of fine-tuning and adjustments. This vessel, constructed by the Turkish shipyard RMK Marine, is outfitted with two masts that support 3,000 square meters of sail area, enabling it to transport up to 5,300 tons of cargo over long distances.

Jean Zanuttini, President of Neoline, asserts that the Neoliner Origin will achieve approximately 80% in savings on greenhouse gas emissions. "By harnessing the wind and reducing speed from 15 knots (about 30 km/h) to 11 knots (about 20 km/h), we cut fuel consumption and thus emissions by five times compared to a conventional ship," he highlighted in an interview. With 90% of global trade conducted by sea, the maritime sector is responsible for nearly 3% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization.

The project, initiated in 2011, has received substantial support, including from the French Public Investment Bank (BPI). CMA CGM, a major global shipping and logistics firm with a fleet of over 500 vessels, has also partnered with the project. "We're talking about sails covering 3,000 m², which is half the size of a football field. It's enormous," noted Karine Desrues, Vice President in charge of Research and Development at the company. Neoline hopes to initiate the construction of a second vessel soon to "meet a maximum of transport needs," added Jean Zanuttini.

This innovative approach to sustainable maritime shipping is part of a broader movement towards reducing the environmental impact of global trade. As the world increasingly seeks eco-friendly transportation solutions, projects like the Neoliner Origin are paving the way for a greener future in marine transport, setting new standards in the industry for environmental responsibility and innovation.
