The Italian Naval League Section of Palermo inaugurated today the renovated social headquarters in Via Marinai Alliata, 4c, hosted in a villa confiscated from the mafia, once used as a drug refinery. This event represents an important step forward in promoting legality and social inclusion through the recovery of a property seized from organized crime.
An ambitious project for the community
The building, entrusted to the Palermo Section of the Italian Naval League (LNI) in 2005, has already benefited from restructuring interventions. However, the recent works mark the beginning of a more ambitious project aimed at transforming the structure into an accessible and inclusive center. Thanks to the contribution of LNI members, the building is now fully accessible to people with disabilities and ready to host activities for the citizens of Palermo.
The headquarters will host sports, cultural, and educational events dedicated to athletes, sea enthusiasts, and students from all over Italy, promoting active participation and social solidarity.
The inauguration ceremony
At the inaugural ceremony, led by the President of the LNI of Palermo Nicola Vitello and the board of the Section, prominent institutional figures participated. Present were the Sports Assessor of Palermo Alessandro Anello and the Environment Assessor Pietro Alongi. Representing the Italian Naval League were:
- Donato Marzano, National President of the LNI;
- Giuseppe Tisci, Regional Delegate for Western Sicily;
- Agatino Catania, Regional Delegate for Eastern Sicily;
- Carlo Bruno, member and instructor, formerly Sicilian Regional Delegate, who as President of the Section took over the confiscated property.
The ceremony concluded with the traditional ribbon-cutting and a tribute from the State Police to Carmelo Forastieri, a Paralympic athlete of the LNI, recently called up for the Hansa class World Championships in Australia.
A symbol of rebirth and hope
"After two years of work, we have completed a structure that not only trains sailors but promotes socialization and social inclusion. This place, now accessible to people with disabilities, allows us to enhance the potential of everyone," said Nicola Vitello, President of the LNI Palermo Section.
National President Donato Marzano added: "Since 2005, this property has been a stronghold in the service of the territory and the most vulnerable social classes. We are committed to enhancing assets confiscated from crime to promote legality, respect, loyalty, and solidarity. Through the 'Sea of Legality' campaign, we manage 22 boats confiscated from criminal organizations, including the 'Our Dream' and 'Azimut' boats, dedicated to the heroes of legality Falcone, Borsellino, and Don Pino Puglisi."
'Our Dream,' Marzano emphasized, is also the first "legality boat" fully accessible to people with disabilities.
A future of inclusion and participation
The inauguration of the Italian Naval League headquarters in Palermo is not just a celebration of the rebirth of a symbolic place, but also a renewed commitment to promoting fundamental values such as legality, solidarity, and inclusion. The new headquarters will become a reference point for all those who wish to approach the sea and nautical activities, contributing to the social and cultural development of the Palermo community.
