A 15-year-old changes the course of ships in the Mediterranean Sea

From his home computer, a young Italian hacker managed to alter the routes of some oil tankers. Purely for fun.

Most hackers usually aim to harm companies or organizations, with clear financial goals, by stealing data to then blackmail them. In this case, the purpose was merely for entertainment.

This young teenager from Cesena began his hacking experience by changing grades on the electronic class register. Later on, he shifted his focus to other targets: he was able to breach highly secure computer systems, such as those of shipping companies.

When the reports of diverted cargo ships reached the district cybercrime office in Bologna, no one thought that behind it all was a teenager.

The very young hacker was identified and reported after an investigation conducted by the Postal Police and coordinated by the Bologna District Attorney's Office in charge of cybercrimes.

Experts are currently analyzing the computers and devices confiscated from the boy's home to reconstruct all his activities. The Bologna Juvenile Court will assess the measures to be taken against the 15-year-old.

This incident raises awareness about the vulnerability of computer systems and the importance of enhancing digital security in all sectors.
