Fenders are designed to protect the sides of boats from damage during mooring or other dangerous maneuvers:

- docking near other ships;
- passing through a crowded harbor;
- joint mooring;
- maneuvering in narrow straits.

After filling the fenders with air and creating the necessary pressure inside, they are attached by the eyes and placed horizontally or hung vertically along the side to create a series of buffers to protect the hull perimeter. During the impact, the devices act as a shock absorber and dampen shock waves, protecting the hull coating from physical damage.

To buy such devices is much cheaper than repairing the caused damage, and therefore almost every shipowner has a supply of protective dampers. For medium-sized yachts, the standard quantity is about 8 pieces. Docks and marinas are not always equipped with their own fenders to protect the sides from friction or collision with a wooden or concrete pier during high and low tides or heavy waves.

To withstand such loads for a long time, modern technologies for the manufacturing of fenders come into play. Unlike old equipment, such as logs wrapped with ropes or rope baskets with trash, fenders are made of durable and elastic materials that are not subject to decay, are resistant to abrasion and mechanical deformation.
