The J1708 Engine Gateway YDES-04 serves as a critical link between engines featuring a J1708 serial interface and NMEA 2000 marine digital networks. With this gateway, users gain access to essential engine data, including revolutions, temperature, working hours, fuel rate, and more, displayed on chart plotters and other NMEA 2000 network-connected devices.
This versatile gateway supports three protocols operating over J1708:
- The standard J1587, widely used by various manufacturers such as Caterpillar with ATA Data Link (e.g., 3176B, 3412C, and 3408C models).
- The proprietary Volvo Penta protocol utilized in engines with EDC I (e.g., KAD 44, KAD 300, TAMD 73..75); also compatible with EDC II (e.g., D12C-A MP).
- The proprietary Cummins KCM-II protocol found in engines like KTA19 and KTA38.
Designed to replace or duplicate broken instruments, the J1708 Engine Gateway offers the added benefits of remote engine monitoring when paired with a Wi-Fi-enabled chart plotter or our Wi-Fi Gateway. It facilitates the logging of engine and fuel usage, making it an invaluable tool for crew or renters when combined with recording devices like the Voyage Recorder. Additionally, users can remotely record engine data for service applications.
The gateway provides comprehensive engine data, including support for two fuel tanks and two batteries. It covers all NMEA 2000-supported engine data, excluding tilt/trim for J1587 engines and offering essential information for KAD engines (refer to the provided table for details). The available data on the chart plotter is contingent on the engine controller firmware and the number of installed sensors.
Equipped with a MicroSD card slot, the gateway allows for easy configuration, enabling users to load a text file with settings, retrieve the current configuration, update the device firmware, and record data from J1708 and NMEA 2000 interfaces for configuration and diagnosis purposes.
Key Features:
- Pioneering support for proprietary Volvo Penta KAD/TAMD protocol and Cummins KCM-II protocol.
- User alert settings for high revolutions, boost pressure, coolant temperature, low oil pressure, and low alternator voltage.
- Cost-effective installation without the need for additional cables in most cases.
- High-voltage galvanic isolation between J1708 and NMEA 2000 interfaces.
- J1708 data recording for diagnostics and configuration.
- Reporting capabilities for one engine and transmission, two batteries, and two fuel tanks.
Compatibility is broad, extending to virtually all equipment supporting NMEA 2000. The gateway is supplied with a connector compatible with SeaTalk NG or NMEA 2000 Micro Male, with adapter cables available for other networks such as Raymarine SeaTalk NG, Simrad SimNet, Furuno CAN, and Garmin NMEA 2000 Micro.
