About Battery Chargers

The electrical system of a sailing yacht runs on batteries most of the time. On a motor yacht, the engine runs longer, but during anchorages the onboard equipment is still powered by the battery. If the yacht does not have solar panels or a wind generator, then the batteries are regularly deeply discharged

Incorrect or untimely charging of batteries leads to loss of capacity, reduces operating time without recharging, and ultimately causes the batteries to fail prematurely. Replacing a high-capacity battery is an expensive procedure, which can be avoided with chargers specifically designed for yachts.

Types of Boat Battery Chargers

There are two types of charging devices used on sailing and motor yachts. The first charges the batteries from the shore AC power supply, the second - from the internal combustion engine generator.

Charger for Traction Batteries

All car enthusiasts know that a starter battery lasts in a car for 5-7 years and can withstand thousands of engine starts over the course of its operation. But as soon as you discharge it to 50% capacity 30-40 times, the battery will immediately fail. Thin plates will not withstand cyclic load and will collapse.

To ensure that the battery can withstand hundreds of charge-discharge cycles without damage, the grids of the battery plates are made thicker, the porous active material is replaced with a dense one, and the plates themselves are wrapped in durable fiberglass. Such batteries are called traction batteries.

Since the design and operating methods of starting and traction batteries are different, these batteries also need to be charged differently. The first option is a car or boat generator with a constant output voltage. The process of charging traction batteries consists of 3-4 stages, for each of which the charger sets its own voltage value.

With a properly selected charger, traction batteries last longer. At lower voltages, sulfation develops in the active material and the battery capacity quickly drops. If it is elevated, the grids of the positive plates corrode. The gas pressure in the housing increases, it rushes out and takes away part of the electrolyte. Since it is impossible to replenish water loss in gel and AGM batteries, recharging for these batteries is not an option.

A modern charger has an algorithm for each type of traction lead-acid battery. A battery with liquid electrolyte is charged at a voltage of 14.8 Volts and then desulfated at 15.1-15.5 V. Traction gel and AGM batteries - at 14.2-14.4 V. Sealed liquid acid - 14.4 V. In some charger models, the user can create his own voltage profile for any type of traction battery.

Since chargers for traction boat batteries have to work in high humidity and strong vibration, models for open boats are produced in sealed and shockproof housings. But if there are rooms on the boat or yacht that are inaccessible to direct water, protection class IP22 is sufficient. Electronic components in such models are protected from moisture by polymer films.

Therefore, we recommend that you find out the type of batteries before buying a charger. For gel, AGM and liquid-acid batteries, the permissible charging current is different.

If the battery consists of 2 or 3 traction batteries connected in parallel, buy a powerful charger. The recommended charger current is at least 10% of the battery capacity.

Make sure that the charger output voltage ripple level is 5% or less, the efficiency is 85-90%, and the power factor is close to 1.

Features of Portable Chargers

The main application of portable devices is on small boats, that is, where there is not enough space to install permanent onboard devices. At the same time, of course, no one forbids using them in any other situations, keeping in mind the distinctive features of their operation.

It has already been mentioned that three types of batteries can be used as traction batteries for a boat electric motor. These are wet batteries, AGM and gel batteries. They differ in their operational properties and the state of the electrolyte contained in them. All three types of batteries require different charging methods.

Portable chargers can only be used with the first two types of batteries - wet and AMG batteries.

What are the main differences between these models?

Firstly, the charge current. The higher it is, the faster the battery is charged. Portable devices are available with two charging currents: -5 Amps and 10 Amps.

The second significant difference is the number of simultaneously charged batteries. If you have an electric motor with a supply voltage of 24 Volts, that is, you use two batteries, you should consider purchasing a model for simultaneous charging of two batteries at once. With this approach, there is no need to control the charging process and switch between batteries.

All models operate in fully automatic mode and charge in several stages. At the first stage, a charge is carried out with a constant current, then recharging occurs. The automatic operating mode eliminates battery recharging, which is a necessary condition for AGM batteries.

The chargers are equipped with an LED display to indicate the current status. The display shows power connection, full charge and no connection to the battery.

The electrical circuit breaker prevents switching on in the event of a short circuit and incorrect polarity.

When using portable models, keep the following in mind:

  • unlike onboard chargers, portable chargers are not waterproof, so charge on shore rather than in the boat;
  • it is not recommended to use an additional extension cord to connect the charger to the AC mains;
  • check the polarity - the positive terminal of the battery is usually larger in diameter than the negative terminal;
  • connect the charger cables to the battery properly: RED wire to the positive electrode of the battery, BLACK wire to the negative electrode;
  • disconnect the charger from the battery in reverse order.

DC-DC Battery Chargers

A DC-DC charger is a microprocessor-controlled DC-DC converter in which the output voltages and current vary depending on the state of the connected battery. DC-DC charger is used for charging and servicing high-capacity service batteries on boats, cars and special-purpose vehicles. It eliminates the disadvantages of a car-type alternator and turns it into a modern charger suitable for all types of deep-cycle batteries.

Unlike a generator, which charges batteries at a constant voltage, a DC-DC device changes the voltage several times during the charging process. First, the voltage is adjusted so that the current in the circuit does not decrease as the battery charges, but remains constant. Thanks to this, the batteries receive a significant charge and quickly restore their condition during short-term movement of a car or boat and are fully charged during a trip over a long distance. For fully charged DC-DC batteries, the device reduces the output voltage to a safe level and prevents dangerous overcharging

The output voltage of a 12-volt DC-DC device remains stable even when the input voltage fluctuates between 10.5 and 15 volts. Thus, changes in generator voltage or cable losses do not affect the service battery. It always charges in the correct mode and its capacity does not decrease due to regular undercharging or overcharging. The starting battery is charged first from the generator.

Galvanic isolation between input and output ensures absolute separation of the starting and service group circuits and reliably prevents mutual discharge of batteries. This ensures that the car or boat will start under any circumstances.

Waterproof Chargers

These are the ones that are desirable to use on a yacht. They are available in several protection classes.

  • The charger is IP65 – dustproof and protected from water jets from any direction. Housings are usually made of plastic. Designed to work in environments with humidity up to 95%. They have built-in protection against incorrectly connected polarity, short circuit and overheating. In powerful devices, a cooling fan with a lower protection class is installed. They operate at ambient temperatures from -30 to +30 degrees. Charge current - up to 120 amperes, voltage - 12 or 24 volts.
  • The IP67 chargers are dustproof and can be briefly immersed in water up to a depth of one meter. Work in water is not expected. The housings are made of aluminum or shockproof plastic. They operate at temperatures from -20 to +40 degrees. Charge current – up to 25 amperes. They operate without a fan and are cooled by a radiator on the case.
  • The charger is IP68 – dustproof and works when submerged in water. The shockproof housing is made of aluminum or aluminum with plastic inserts. Charge current – up to 20 amperes. Operates without a cooling fan.

How to Choose a Battery Charger for an Electric Boat Motor

AC devices have a high power factor, operate over a wide input voltage range, and are capable of charging all types of lead-acid and lithium batteries.

Models powered by a yacht engine generator have an input voltage of 12 or 24 Volts and a charging current of up to 400 A. They are suitable for charging battery groups with a capacity of up to 900 Ah or more. The devices are equipped with a remote control, a battery temperature sensor and a sensor that compensates for voltage drop in a long cable. The user selects the charging voltage independently depending on the type of battery installed. Devices of this type speed up the charging of service batteries by 5-10 times, reduce the engine operating time for charging batteries and save fuel.

Decide how many charging blocks you will need for your electric motor's power system - if you are using a starter battery to start your drive motor, you may want to consider that as well. Also figure out which battery recharging speed is most suitable to your needs when purchasing a charger.
