Anchor and mooring buoys have similarities and differences in their functions. Both indicate the location of the anchor. But the anchoring buoy marks the location of the bottom anchor of the coastal booms or your yacht, and the mooring buoy is located above the so-called dead anchor, where several yachts are moored.

Anchoring Buoys

To reduce the destructive power of a tidal wave, the impact of oil or other pollution on the coastal or beach areas, as well as for other purposes, containment booms are installed. They, like your yacht, are held in place by bottom anchors. Such anchors are also used when installing floating berths.

In order to immediately determine the location of such a bottom anchor, anchoring buoys are used complete with a signal buoy. For a yachtsman or boat owner it’s nothing unfamiliar. In the same way, the skipper drops anchor in an unequipped place, noting its location of anchoring buoy. When setting on two anchors, both are marked by anchoring buoys or one of the anchors (auxiliary) is marked by a signal buoy.

The anchoring buoy is attached to the anchor head with a buoy rope - a special cable, the length of which should allow the buoy to deviate slightly from perpendicular to the anchor.

In contrast to the regulated process of installing booms and berths, the yacht owner, when choosing an anchoring buoy, is guided by his own ideas about the efficiency of the model. This accessory does not need to be large in size, but it must be brightly colored so that it can be detected in any weather and at any time of the day.

The simplest option is an anchoring buoy in the form of a float with a through hole. But if you want to provide a more convenient process for catching a buoy from the water, choose a model with several eyes, at the top and bottom.

Mooring Buoys

To anchor a yacht or several yachts on a stationary or dead anchor, mooring buoys are used, which not only indicate the location of the anchor to which to moor, but are themselves a mooring device.

A stationary anchor is a heavy block of concrete or any other material that is guaranteed not to move the yachts moored to it. We are, of course, not talking about the special effort of the skipper or skippers, but about the ability of a dead anchor to hold the ship or ships in place during mooring, even when the weather changes.

A mooring buoy is attached to this anchor using a buoy rope. Then there may be various options for organizing the process:

  • a mooring loop is attached to the buoy rope, and mooring lines are brought into it;
  • there is no mooring loop; yachts are moored under the mooring buoy.

The shape of the mooring buoy is also selected depending on the choice of mooring process. But in any case, the mooring buoy must have an eye or a metal loop at the bottom and top.

Mooring buoys with a double top loop are now being produced, and the organizers of anchored moorings have already appreciated the advantage of such models: they are much more convenient and reliable to be grasped by the hook, which is used when placing the yacht at a dead anchor. After all, in order to get to the mooring loop or securely place the mooring lines under the base of the mooring buoy, it should be lifted out of the water to a height convenient for this manipulation.

There may be several mooring berths in one marina or harbor, so it is very important to follow the rules of mooring so that an insecure anchorage does not rip the yacht off its anchor. This would be a threat to both the yacht that broke its anchor and its neighbors in the marina.

The topRik marketplace has selected the latest models of mooring buoys from the best marine equipment manufacturers, so you can choose from the following options:

  • material used – stainless and galvanized steel, marine polymers;
