What Are Boat Cushion Fenders Used For?
Unpredictable weather conditions in unfamiliar places, strong waves and inertia of the course sometimes create difficult conditions when sailing. As a result, during a series of maneuvers, the boat may collide with the walls of the lock, the surface of the pier, or even another yacht.
Sometimes a slight blow is enough to leave a chip or dent on the hull.
Therefore, the vast majority of captains use special devices that provide safe mooring and other maneuvers - attachable cushion fenders. Before mooring or when going through dangerous area, they are installed on the sides, bow or stern of the boat and in the event of a collision, they take on the blow and absorb it.
Another of the most important functions of cushion fenders is to protect the hull from friction while docked, especially next to another boat. In this case, they serve as an insulating gasket between the side of the yacht and other surfaces and thus protect against deep scratches and other abrasive damage to the coating.
Owners of private or permanent mooring spots often develop this space by installing quay solid bumpers, mooring fenders or quay fenders so that the dock also provides protection to docking boats. Since such devices are installed individually right at the point of contact, they will not move or slide.
But not everyone can afford this, especially since many people like to travel and visit unfamiliar places where piers may not be equipped and made of hardwood, stone, metal or concrete. And the teams, each in their own way, ensure the safety of the ship and prepare for the unexpected.
Each ship has a set of fenders, which can differ significantly from each other in design, shape and purpose. Let’s take a look at flat cushion fenders - their strengths and weaknesses, the ways to use them and how to store them.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Cushion Fenders
The price variety of cushion dampers is very wide, so you can find both reliable and durable models and almost disposable ones that cannot withstand any serious loads.
It would be unfair to blame all cushion fenders for failing after one or two swims due to the quality of some products. Because such fenders are produced precisely for these purposes - comfortable mooring conditions, protection of small boats in already well-equipped docks. For this, huge buoys or long cylinders are not needed as many simply do not want to overpay for unnecessary protection. Therefore, we rather consider the design itself and the materials used.
Due to its large area, a flat fender creates less pressure on the side of the vessel and distributes the load more efficiently and at the same time covers more surface, protecting it from friction and other damage.
The cushions are effective as spacers between quay fenders and the ship's hull, as well as protection against collisions with round surfaces, railings, piles and corners. They also allow, if necessary, to increase the distance between the berth and the side by fastening several fenders together in multiple layers.
Polyurethane foam fenders are not afraid of punctures and damage to the coating, there is no need to monitor internal pressure and temperature differences due to a change in the climatic zone. They can be used as floating pontoons, rescue devices, as seats on boats and the boat itself.
Cheaper fenders that don't have PVC-lined foam and aren't sun-protected, degrade much faster when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Incredibly light and weighing almost nothing, they are very convenient to move, but you also need to treat them more carefully and securely fasten them - they might be quickly carried away into the open sea during a strong wind.
How to Choose a Cushion Fender
Such models are most often found in several types:
Inflatable cushion fender
This is usually a box-shaped model made of PVC, which, unlike classic fenders, has a large area of contact with the coating and thus more reliably insures against friction and other contacts.
It primarily serves to protect the hull during mooring next to mooring piles, logs and other round objects where conventional hinged ball-shaped dampers or vertically mounted fenders can have problems - they will roll along the side.
It is also used when it is necessary to protect the coating during docking in cramped docks, crowded marinas and during the passage of narrow areas.
Usually, they have various types of fasteners such as stainless-steel rings, longitudinal eyes or loops around the entire perimeter of the side faces. It has all the advantages that made PVC fenders so popular:
- immunity of the material to ultraviolet and temperature extremes;
- increased resistance to wear, frequent use and friction;
- inertness to sea water and oil products like oils and diesel;
- thick walls and pressure stability.
Panels made of polyurethane foam.
Most often, these are foam plates sheathed in a layer of hard polyvinyl chloride fabric, plastic, rubber or a softer PVC fabric. There are also many varieties of sandwich plates, in which polyurethane foam serves as a filling.
Such plates are practically indispensable in mooring situations near corners or mooring posts - docking near uneven objects is a particular problem: corners tend to push conventional fenders aside and as a result, the coating comes into contact with the pile or fence, which can lead to unpleasant consequences. On catamarans or boats with a low and flat transom, they can be used as stern protection devices.
Available in a huge variety of sizes, quality and prices. From very small dimensions for ship dinghies, inflatable boats and rafts to large dense plates that will fit even large yachts. Usually, they do not have any special fasteners, except for the slits for belts or ropes. Thanks to this, they can be mounted both vertically and horizontally, combined with each other into complex structures and even placed in two or three layers.
Composite and combined cushion fenders.
This is a type of polyurethane foam fenders with a more durable and complex shell, a variation of foam boards for the purpose of long-term use and permanent use - many have metal-reinforced longitudinal or transverse eyes.
Multi-purpose, because they can serve both as ordinary side fenders, withstanding severe loads, and serve as stern protection, allow you to comfortably moor next to railing, corners and mooring posts.
They are most actively used on single-hull sailing boats, because they do not require storage space on the ship itself - they are usually fixed on rails thanks to hooks - in this form they can just stay there during the whole sailing trip. This is very convenient because there are always problems with free space on small boats, and also some models can be used as steps when climbing aboard.
There are also panels that consist of two plates on a hinge or simply bent at an angle, thanks to which they cover the surface of the side more gently and fidget less during pitching.
How to Store
During a trip, cushion fenders can be stored in a locker or used as seats or backrests. Polyurethane foam fenders without a PVC sheath should not be stored under the sun - this ages the material, it becomes more brittle and begins to crumble.
On land, it is best to store the fenders in a dry, ventilated area. Open fire is very dangerous for this type of protective dampers and can even lead to a fire both on land and at sea.
In the case of inflatable cushion fenders made of polyvinyl chloride, it is worth taking care of them in the same way as for classic fenders - check the condition of the valve, the stability of the internal pressure and the tightness of the chamber. Keep them away from rough surfaces and sharp tools.
