The operating principle of surface heat exchangers is very simple. The coolant and heat consumer, isolated from each other, transfer heat to each other through the material that is located between them. Depending on the design, these may be pipes or plates. For these purposes, thermally conductive materials are used, for example, stainless steel, alloys and other materials. As a result, the medium passing through the heat exchanger transfers heat to the refrigerant without contacting it. The key operating principle of surface heat exchangers is that the media do not contact, that is, they do not mix.

Types of Liquid Heat Exchangers

It is impossible to rely entirely on the heat generated by the engines to cover all the needs of the vessel (heating, water heating, fuel and oil heating) - the main engine does not always work. Therefore, most vessels with a liquid heating system also have a separate boiler that runs on liquid fuel. Its heat is also used to heat the fuel when starting the main engine.

The living quarters of small yachts are usually heated with preheated air from the ship's air conditioning system, which can either heat or cool the air depending on the outside temperature. Larger ships often have a central water heating system. Water is the most common coolant, but heavy fuel ships still need steam or heated oil to heat the fuel. Hot water for the crew's needs is heated in a separate boiler from the boiler's hot water, steam, oil or electricity.

In the heat exchangers of boat heating systems, various liquids and gases with different temperatures exchange heat. The cold substance in the heat exchanger heats up, the hot substance cools down. Depending on what process we need, they are called coolers or heaters.

In the engine room of ships of various types and sizes you can find a variety of heat exchangers:

  • fresh water coolers (after the desalination plant);
  • main engine cooling water heaters during shutdown before starting, used to preheat diesel engines;
  • engine oil coolers - two for the main engine (the redundancy principle is already familiar to us!) and one for each auxiliary diesel engine;
  • engine oil heaters - before the filters and before starting the engine;
  • combustion air coolers after the turbine-compressor;
  • oil fuel heaters before cleaning (separator, filters) and before entering the engine;
  • air heaters for ship heating.

In this short review we are interested in the latest type of heat exchangers for the liquid heating system of a yacht.

Structurally, heat exchangers are also divided into several categories.

Tube heat exchangers, in turn, are divided into models with straight pipes and U-shaped pipes.

The simplest heat exchanger is just a pipe inside a pipe. A cold tube containing water passes through a larger pipe filled with a hot agent. In this case, the surface of the inner tube heats up and transfers heat to the water. This is how boilers work. If there are many tubes and they are collected in a bundle, then a shell-and-tube heat exchanger is obtained. Devices with a tube bundle secured at the ends with gratings are common in industry and used for domestic water treatment.

Twisted heat exchangers are coils wound in a housing. The interpipe space is filled with another flow. The equipment is used when the pressure of one of the agents is high.

Two-pipe heat exchangers are used to transfer heat in gas-liquid phases. The devices can operate under pressure with high heat transfer.

Plate heat exchangers introduce a special design of heating pipes, assembled in the form of a flat element of their finned pipes and multi-pass water movement. The plates resemble accordions.

Plate heat exchangers are highly efficient, but the gaps between the plates become clogged and require cleaning. The equipment is disassembled for cleaning. It is important to install a magnetic mesh filter in place, which prevents the formation of sediment. Plate heat exchangers can be connected to automated control.

Features and Advantages

To make full use of all marine heating benefits, it is necessary to know the functions of each part of this sometimes quite complex technological circuit. Yacht heat exchanger is one of the most important devices that significantly affects heating efficiency.

There is some confusion when defining of heat exchanger features, which is explained by the presence of heating system radiators in everyday life. It is a mistake to attribute the functions of a radiator to the heat exchangers of a marine heating system.

A radiator is, of course, also a heat exchanger, but with a simplified function, which is to transfer heat from the coolant to the surrounding air.

A heat exchanger is an entire system that is responsible for transferring heat from a heated medium to the one that needs to be heated. The main difference is that heat is removed from the radiator from the incoming air, and in the heat exchanger - by the flow of coolant circulating in the cooling system of the power unit.

Why do you need a heat exchanger in a heating system? Imagine that in the pipes of a yacht’s heating system there is water at a boiling point... This will lead to rupture of plastic pipes and burns. Each thermal unit has a heat exchanger system that allows you to maintain and adjust certain temperature parameters.

Heat exchange equipment in the heating system can significantly reduce resource consumption and achieve a high degree of control and regulation of the process.

The heating system can be:

  • dependent - a system without a heat exchanger, when heat is supplied from the central heating point regularly in a certain amount;
  • independent - a system with a heat exchanger that allows you to regulate the amount of incoming energy in accordance with the needs of the end consumer.

The heat exchanger in the heating system divides a single structure into two parts: one of them belongs to the supplier, and the other to the heat consumer. The device serves as an intermediate station through which hot water with various impurities passes: antifreeze, oil and other components.

Application on a Yacht

Correct heat exchanger applications allow you to provide the heating system with coolant from a diesel or gasoline engine, solar or electric batteries, as well as from a specially installed water boiler.

Heat transfer fluids are part of marine heating integration, which, in addition to the possible heat sources already mentioned, may also include the yacht’s water heating pipes, pumps, fans or convectors, boilers, liquid heaters, fuel supply and exhaust gas removal systems.

When developing a water heating scheme for a boat, make sure to use only compatible boat systems. With topRik marketplace you can select compatible elements to create an effective heating system specifically for your yacht. We have a wide selection of all components for installing a heating system on a boat of any type, size and configuration.
