If you are not planning long sea passages, then sea iceboxes are an excellent solution to the problem of cooling the supplies of food and drinks that you take on board for a coastal cruise, going out to sea for fishing or a weekend getaway.

It is also an excellent choice for those who organize charters and want to provide individual portable iceboxes in all guest cabins in addition to the main fixed and built-in refrigerators in the galley, saloon or flybridge.

And of course, in such a refrigerated container the catch will be perfectly preserved, even if you are going on a multi-day fishing trip.

Today, a mobile icebox for a yacht or boat is no longer a luxury, but an item that provides comfort on board. Marine iceboxes these days are not only found on board cruising yachts and superyachts or huge speedboats. This is an accessory available to many boaters that will fit perfectly into the interior of any modern boat over 4.5 meters in length. The main thing is to make the right choice in terms of dimensions and cooling method.

Types of Iceboxes

Marine iceboxes can be divided into three types: thermobox, isothermal and hybrid electro-gas. There are also compressor ones, but these are noticeably more expensive models and are essentially ordinary household refrigerators, just smaller in volume and much more expensive. But while it is possible to provide a temperature of -18 degrees, this is not suitable for avid fishermen precisely because of its small volume. Fishermen would rather take a large chest freezer, the same kind that ice cream sellers use.

Regular Thermobox

This type of marine iceboxes are also called an insulated container. It is a well-insulated box with a volume of 10 liters or more with a hole for draining water. The easiest way to use it: throw in food, line it with cold accumulators (or bottles of frozen water). You can also use dry ice. There is a plug on the side to drain water or condensate. It can store cold for 32 hours. Other advantages of this type include a large selection of manufacturers and volumes, ease of maintenance, lightness, strength, water resistance and long service life.

One example of such marine icebox on the topRik marketplace is the Convoy 65 icebox from the legendary outdoor manufacturer Coleman. This model is made of polyurethane foam with an additional rubber coating to provide even greater water insulation and keep food and drinks frozen for days. The inner upholstery material contains an antimicrobial additive.

This is the peculiarity of this type of marine iceboxes - they do not freeze, but reliably isolate from the external environment due to the design and materials used: a double wall made of polystyrene foam with a layer of polyurethane foam or completely made of polyurethane foam. On the preference of the latter as a material for portable iceboxes we will describe below.

It is recommended to keep food and drinks in iceboxes of this type frozen or very chilled.

Thermoelectric Marine Iceboxes

The basis is the same thermobox, only a Peltier cooling element is mounted in the top cover, blown by fans on both sides. It cannot freeze, but only provides a significant difference in temperature with the external environment - these are different indicators in different models. The temperature inside can be further reduced by using additional cold accumulators, which should be frozen before use in the freezer at home or in the stationary (built-in) refrigerator of the yacht.

These models operate on 220 V and 12 V mains and have several cooling modes.

An example of such a model in the topRik marketplace - thermoelectric icebox Powerbox Plus 28. The premium polyurethane foam refrigerator operates on 12 V or 230 V (both cables are included). Combined with efficient polyurethane foam, the refrigerator maintains its contents at -19°C at room temperature. Equipped with a control dial with 4 modes allowing you to choose the level of performance and efficiency. It can be turned off without unplugging the cable. ECO, NIGHT and MAX modes expand the capabilities to provide A++ energy saving level, reduce noise levels, and maximize cooling.

Absorption Marine Icebox

Capable of receiving power from both a 220 V and 12-24 V network, as well as from a gas cylinder. Such models are available for both automobiles and yachts - with an upper door position. Models for boats feature additional waterproofing.

As for the gas energy source, such a model of marine icebox runs on a regular propane-butane gas cylinder, which can be refilled at any gas station. Gas consumption depends on the volume of the storage chamber of icebox. Such electric-gas thermal boxes are absolutely silent and can even freeze ice, providing a high temperature difference between inside and outside.

It works really well, since the quality and cooling effect is close to a stationary refrigerator, also it is not loud at all, but for our purposes it is too heavy and relatively expensive.

How to Choose an Icebox for a Yacht

Are you thinking about purchasing marine icebox, but don’t know where to start and what characteristics to compare?

Then let's start in order. First of all, immediately discard plans to use car cool boxes, containers and refrigerators. All this equipment does not meet the requirements for marine accessories in terms of insulation, moisture resistance and other parameters.

It is better to pick any thermal container from the point of view of its functionality and thermal insulation properties. The thermal insulation properties of a thermal container depend on the material used as internal insulation.

Polyurethane Foam - Unrivaled

Typically, 2 types of insulation are used: expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) and/or polyurethane foam (PPU).

The main difference between these two materials is their physical properties; EPS has a solid form, PPU is a liquid plastic.

Making a thermal container can be thought of as placing a box within a box, between the walls of which there is a space that is filled with heat-insulating material. This role can be played by either rigid PPS or liquid polyurethane foam. It is the technology of filling the internal part that directly affects the thermal insulation properties of marine icebox. When using expanded polystyrene (EPS), it is impossible to close all the bends and cavities inside the structure, since rigid panels do not allow this.

When using liquid polyurethane foam, this problem is completely eliminated, the foam fills the entire space inside between the chambers and pushes out the air from the inside, then it hardens and takes the exact shape of the required structure, creating a very dense thermal insulating inner layer.

The most important parameter characterizing a material as insulation is the thermal conductivity coefficient. Polyurethane foam has a low thermal conductivity coefficient, so it is the most effective thermal insulation material. It is a good insulator and quite durable material, but it is easy to damage, so in the production of marine iceboxes alternate layers of materials. The outer shell (frame) is made of impact-resistant plastic, the inner shell is made of durable food-grade plastic, and between them a low-strength material, but with a low thermal conductivity coefficient, is poured - polyurethane foam.

In all marine iceboxes, presented in the topRik marketplace, uses only polyurethane foam.

If There is No Double Insulation

Not always marine iceboxes have double insulated body and lid. Double insulation is always preferable as the loss of internal temperature through the cover will occur more quickly. If you purchased a thermal container without thermal insulation in the lid, use cold accumulators on top of chilled foods and drinks.

The presence of cold accumulators in the thermal container helps to cool foods and drinks for a long time, and the number of cold accumulators is important. It is recommended to fill the thermobox with cold accumulators to at least 10% of the volume of the thermobox itself.

Remember that a large volume of marine iceboxes with cold accumulators will keep the temperature longer, compared to a thermal container with a smaller volume.

Also consider the fact that large areas of air inside the icebox lead to faster temperature loss, so to keep the cold in for as long as possible, try to reduce the air space to a minimum.

Demand Additional Amenities

Functional properties also include various additional conveniences in use of marine iceboxes, for example: adjustable shoulder strap, wheels, cup holders, condensate drain valve, folding handles, additional wires, etc.

How to Extend Cold Retention Time

It should be remembered that marine iceboxes are not exactly a refrigerator; they cannot cool anything, much less freeze, but can only maintain the initial temperature of food and drinks placed in them for some time. In this regard, there are several rules that will help extend the cold retention time in the marine iceboxes.

  • Only chilled or frozen foods and drinks should be placed in iceboxes.
  • When using the icebox, be careful not to allow heat to get inside. In sunny weather, keep it in the shade. When removing something from inside, open and close the lid as quickly as possible. To keep things cold, don’t open the drawer unless necessary, and even more so, don’t leave it open.
  • Food and drinks in the icebox must be folded neatly and tightly, if necessary (depending on the model), alternating them with cold accumulators.
  • Fill the chamber completely until there is no empty space left. Fill the empty spaces with paper.
  • Place cold accumulators on top, as cold air will fall down, cooling the contents.

Cold storage batteries are very convenient and useful, indispensable on a long trip. They maintain the temperature inside iceboxes for a very long time.
