Usually, shipowners buy a certain stock of protective shock absorbers for the side and stern in order to guarantee protecting themselves from a whole bunch of troubles:
- dents and holes;
- peeling paint and deep scratches;
- coating chips.;
- damaging someone else’s boat.
The process looks something like this: the fenders are filled with air while still on land or before mooring, after which they hang on chains or cables along the length of the vessel so that the lower end barely touches the water surface and does not float. On the boat itself, a mooring line is attached to some reliable low-lying structure, such as mooring duck or railing. Someone gets special hooks for these purposes for convenience. Before sailing, the fenders are lifted aboard.
Inflatable dampeners weigh very little, which makes it possible not to overload the vessel; they can be easily moved and switched, depending on the circumstances. When deflated, they take up very little space and can be stored anywhere on the ship or in a storage room on land.
If the owner prefers to store such devices in a ready-to-use state, then the internal pressure in the chamber must be checked periodically. This is usually done once every one or two years.
